What is study abroad?

Study abroad enables students to pursue educational opportunities in countries outside the United States for credit towards their major at the University of North Georgia. By interacting with another culture, students will broaden their perceptions of the world and the people around them.

Studying abroad is an experience hand-tailored to college students, and you've already taken the first step. It is our goal here at the Center for Global Engagement to help guide you through this journey.

Why should I study abroad?

A study abroad experience is very personal; it affects students in many different ways. Here are some of the common benefits that students get from their time abroad:

Become one of the locals
Study abroad gives you the opportunity to encounter another culture, giving you the chance to learn about more than just the surface differences in language and food, but about the deep uniqueness of another set of values and beliefs.

Learn a foreign language
By immersing yourself in a country that speaks another language, you are forced to quickly pick up the conversational pieces that are hard to learn in a classroom.

Enhance your resume
Study abroad enhances future employment credentials. Research indicates that students with overseas study are more attractive to employers and command better salaries. As the globalization process increases, it is likely that most jobs will have an international dimension.

Learn about yourself
Sometimes, the best way to learn about you is to step out of your comfort zone. Being part of another culture for a time broadens your perspective, and can reinforce values you already have, or help you embrace new ones.

Opportunity to travel
As a college student, you may be at a point in your life where you have less responsibilities than you will later down the road. Traveling through a study abroad program can be a great way to take advantage of this experience before it becomes more challenging to take time off for a trip.

Make new friends
Taking part in a study abroad program is a great form of global exchange; you'll meet individuals who live where you are studying, as well as other international students taking part in similar programs. It's a great chance to meet new people, and make global connections.

For how long can I study abroad?

Short-Term Programs
Short-term programs are often faculty-led trips that do not provide a full immersion in the culture of the host country. You will travel abroad with a group from UNG or other schools within the university system and have limited interaction with locals. Most likely, your courses will be taught by the faculty who is traveling with you. In some cases, you will receive courses taught by host nationals.

Semester Programs
A semester-long program is a way to fully immerse yourself in a new culture and country. Depending on the program, you may also be able to improve your language skills. Semester programs give you the opportunity to interact with host-international students and faculty and experience a new education system.

Year Programs
These programs are usually one-on-one exchange programs with a foreign university. These programs allow you to have a full cultural immersion. You will have the opportunity to interact with host-national students and faculty and experience a new educational system.
